East Auckland Gymnastics Festival
On Wednesday 31st July, a team of 50 students attended the inaugural East Auckland Gymnastics Festival, held at Howick Gymnastics Club.
The purpose of this Festival was to encourage those students who were inexperienced in gymnastics with an opportunity to perform some routines for judges, with a focus on participation rather than qualification for further competitions. It was also a chance for our Auckland Champs and AIMS gymnasts to display their skills and test out their routines on the specialist equipment.
Gymnasts were awarded a score for each apparatus; vault, beam and floor for the girls and vault, bar and floor for the boys. The overall award of a ribbon was based on their average score across the 3 pieces of apparatus.
Somerville students performed with outstanding skills, with 5 bronze, 17 silver and 28 gold ribbons being awarded.
Special thanks go to Autumn A, Hayley G, Celestine Z, Charlize C, Scarlett L and Lucas Z who were very supportive student coaches throughout the competition.
