Mānawatia a Matariki (Māori New Year)
Over the past few weeks, students at Somerville Intermediate School have been learning about Mānawatia a Matariki and delving into our rich cultural heritage as New Zealanders. Each Whānau (family or group) and classroom has engaged in this learning in various ways, including learning te reo Māori, exploring tikanga (protocols), reading and writing about the rich myths surrounding Matariki, and creating art.
Last Thursday, our learning and celebrations culminated with an opportunity for students to fly their Manu tukutuku (kites), a tradition that marks the beginning of Matariki. Some classes also celebrated by making and sharing slow-cooked vegetable soup. Students contributed winter vegetables, and after pushing themselves on the Cross Country course in the morning, they warmed up and shared this special time together with kai (food).
We are very proud of our tauira (students) and their passion and participation in marking Matariki.
