SEZ Gymnastics
On Wednesday 6th June, 44 students attended the SEZ Gymnastics competition at Howick Gymnastics Club. From the outset, this group of gymnasts displayed outstanding skill and sportsmanship as they supported both their teammates and competitors from other schools.
There were a range of categories: In Division 1, Flyers was for those who have mainly taken part in school gymnastics and the Twisters have generally attended gymnastics clubs at some point. The Division 2 athletes have experience competing at an inter club level.
Year 7 and 8 girls Flyers and Year 7/8 boys Flyers and Twisters were up first, arriving bright and early to the school. While at the gym, they delivered amazing performances all around, with Somerville taking out the top placing in each of the categories. Liv H placed first in the Year 7 Flyers and in Year 8 Flyers, Jessie F and Maddy K tied for first. Leo C took out the first spot for Year 7/8 Flyers and Bevan W for the Year 7/8 Twisters. Huge congratulations to all of the people who took part in the competition, you all did amazingly and made your school proud.
Division 1 Flyers (Girls)
Division 1 Flyers & Twisters (Boys)
Year 7 and 8 girls Twisters were in the second round, so they had a little longer with their pre-competition nerves. When they arrived at the gym and began the competition, you could see their concentration on perfecting their routines. It paid off, with Autumn A placing third in the Year 8 Twisters and Tyler A and Holly U- S tying for first place in the Year 7 Twisters. Well done to all of the Twisters who competed at this competition, it was great to see so many stand out performances there.
Division 1 Twisters (Girls)
Special mention must go to Kenzey C (floor) and Bevan W (vault) who both scored perfect 10s; the only ones awarded during the competition.
Division 2
These six gymnasts train between 3 and 16 hours a week each and they displayed their skills in an afternoon session with a more relaxed format than they usually face at competitions. All of them performed extremely well and they cheered their fellow competitors on to do their best too.
Congratulations to the 40 students who have qualified to go to the Auckland Championships, which will be held in August.
Many thanks to all of the parents and friends who helped during our training sessions at Howick Gymnastics Club; Anna Dinneen, Kelly Norris, Lisa Quarterman, Cass Headford, Tess Lewis, Daena Colebrook, Brenda Kerr, Emma Shirley, Nicole Wade, Honour Anderson, Karen Leach and ex-pupils Abby & Lara van Beerendonk. We are also extremely grateful to qualified coaches Kirsten, Charlie and Mia, and Matt who gave up their time to help the students. We also really appreciated the assistance of the student coaches Lucas Z, Scarlett L, Celestine Z, Charlize C, Rose v A and Hayley G. Without all of your efforts, the Somerville students would not have been able to achieve such spectacular results.
