Year 7 Girls
The tournament was hosted by Pakuranga Intermediate School with St Kents College arranging the use of their fields. The organisers decided to press forward with the tournament even though we knew it would eventually rain, but it was a day filled with much laughter, a great deal of slipping and sliding on the wet fields and excellent skills on display.
The girls played 5 matches with the following results:
vs Howick:drew 1-1(goal scorer - Holly U)
Vs Pakuranga:won 4 - 1
(goal scorers: Sacha W x 2, Victoria T x 2)
Vs St Kents:lost 0 - 3
Vs MHJC:drew 0 - 0
Vs BBI:won1 - 0(goal scorer - Holly U)
Although wet and bedraggled by the end of the tournament, the girls had a great time and achieved 3rd place overall in the competition.
Year 8 Girls
On Thursday 23rd May, the Year 8 Girls Somerville Football team travelled to St Kents for the annual South Eastern Zone tournament. This team was mostly made up of players from the last Year 7 team who narrowly missed out on Auckland Champs in 2023, so they were back with a plan and something to prove. The team played two pool games and 5 round robin games to determine the winner of the competition.
Somerville never lost a game and only drew to St Kents. This meant it came down to goal difference and this year Somerville came out victorious. Congratulations girls!
The Year 8 Girls team represented the South Eastern Zone in the Auckland Champs yesterday and made it to the semi-finals. We are very proud of the fourth place they achieved in the Auckland wide tournament.
Year 7 Boys
Last week the Year 7 Boys Football team represented at the South Eastern Zone tournament. Despite the rough conditions, the boys played tremendously well as a team, managing to play free-flowing football. All the games were closely contested, with many goals being scored. Even though they dropped a few games early in the tournament, the boys demonstrated remarkable perseverance.
Despite narrowly missing the opportunity to compete for the top positions, the boys showcased their talent and determination, securing a commendable 8th place finish. They tied with four other teams, and although our goal difference placed us 8th.
We congratulate the Somerville Year 7 Boys Football team on their performance and achievement, and we are proud of the sportsmanship and determination they displayed throughout the tournament.
Year 8 Boys
On Thursday 30th May, the Year 8 boys football team played in the South Eastern Zone tournament held at St Kentigern’s College. There were three teams in each of the four pools. In our pool there was Howick, Mission Heights and ourselves.
Our first match was against Mission Heights which we won 3-0. Next up was Howick which we also won 2-0. We then played in the quarter finals. Although it was a tough match against a physical Ferguson Intermediate team, we came out on top, winning 2-0.
After the quarter-final we found out that we would be competing against our traditional rivals, Bucklands Beach Intermediate in the semis. We started slowly and they scored first to take the lead. We hit back with a goal and were confident going into the second half. After exchanging another goal each, the score was tied up 2-2. Unfortunately, BBI was awarded a penalty kick which beat our keeper and they won the match 3-2.
Playing for 3rd or 4th place, we faced the formidable host team St Kentigerns. After a closely fought battle, the regular time ended tied at 2 goals each. With just 5 minutes of golden point time to secure the victory, the boys dug deep on defence and displayed some awesome attacking plays. With seconds to spare, before having to decide the match by penalty shootout, our captain, Nate, scored the winning goal.
Overall, it was a good tournament. The boys played excellent football and displayed outstanding sportsmanship. Thank you to the parents who supported us on the day.
