SEZ Touch
Girls
On Thursday 7 November, the Girls’ Touch team competed in the SEZ Touch tournament at Barry Curtis Park.
They kicked off the day with an impressive 10-0 victory over BBI. The next game proved to be the toughest, ending in a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Farm Cove. Showing resilience and determination, the team won each of their remaining games and, with the highest points differential, topped their pool.
In a close semi-final match, the girls overcame Beachlands 3-1, which advanced them to the finals for a rematch with Farm Cove. Their outstanding fitness gave them the edge, and they secured the championship with another 3-1 win.
Throughout the tournament, the team conceded only three tries, demonstrating strength on both defense and attack. Now, the girls are gearing up for the Auckland Champs in a few weeks—an exciting challenge ahead!
Boys
The Somerville Boys Touch team had a very successful SEZ tournament. Securing 1st place finish, the team showcased extraordinary resilience, unwavering determination, and exemplary sportsmanship throughout the event.
The entire squad made valuable contributions, playing pivotal roles in the team's success. The team improved in every game and went from strength to strength. Defence was a huge part of our success, with a never give up approach.
They now have qualified for the Auckland Champs Touch tournament to be held on Wednesday 20 November.
Mixed
On Thursday 7 November, the Somerville Intermediate Mixed Touch team competed at the South Eastern Zone tournament held at Sir Barry Curtis Park.
In our first pool game we faced Howick Intermediate. After a strong start Howick came back and tied the game at 4-4. Our team showed resilience and determination to score a try late in the game to win 5-4. Next up was Ferguson Intermediate. This was another close encounter with the game in the balance for most of it. Again, our team fought hard and won 5-4.
In our semi-final we faced a very strong team from Bucklands Beach Intermediate. After a solid start, BBI scored consecutive tries and won convincingly in the end.
Playing for 3rd or 4th place we faced Howick Intermediate again. The two teams were evenly matched with neither team leading by more than a try at any stage. In the last few minutes of the game, our team scored to go ahead and then showed strong defence to eventually win 5-4.
Our team demonstrated outstanding resilience, determination, sportsmanship and athletic skills throughout the day.
Thank you to the organisers, Mrs Pietersen and parents for your support.
