Kai Hakari

Students in the Whakamanatanga Group celebrated Te Wiki o te Reo Māori with a kai hākari (feast). They started the preparations the day before peeling riwai, kumara, cutting paukena and making stuffing during their lunch break.

The next morning all the kai was ready to be put in the kai cooker. Manuka and a cup of earth was put in the bottom of the kai cooker to create the smokey flavour and the kai was put into the cooker with the chickens at the bottom and the vegetables and stuffing on top. While the hāngi was cooking the students worked together to make the rest of the kai and set up the wharekai. Finally, the manuhiri arrived to enjoy the feast they prepared.

The day was a great success and we even had two awesome surprise guest speakers from the New Zealand Army, Staff Sergeant Nadia Pou-Edwards and Corporal Alex Te Aho-rangi came to speak about their experiences in the army.
