Celebrating Culture and Identity at Polyfest 2025
Twenty of our Year 8 Pasifika group had the amazing opportunity to attend Polyfest 2025—and it was an experience they won’t forget anytime soon. More than just a celebration of Pasifika culture, it was a vibrant showcase of the many cultures that make up Aotearoa New Zealand.
The students were blown away by the variety of performances. One standout was a traditional Filipino dance that lit up the stage with energy and colour. Another highlight was trying ‘otai’—a Tongan fruit drink—for the first time. One student described it as being “in their happy place.”
“The atmosphere was electric,” one student said. “The performers were so full of life—everything from their movements to their costumes was inspiring.”
The food and craft stalls were also a huge hit, with many wishing they’d had more time. “Four hours just wasn’t enough—I could’ve stayed all day!” one student commented.
What really made the day special, though, was seeing culture and identity proudly on display. “It wasn’t just for Pasifika students—it was something everyone could enjoy. I hope even more people get to experience it next year,” said another student.
Students also recognised the power of their own voices. “A big thank you to past Pasifika students for their feedback, and to Mrs Franke for making this trip happen. I really hope Polyfest becomes a regular part of our school—it helps us feel proud of who we are.”
As Polyfest celebrated its 50th year, our students came back with full hearts and a stronger sense of belonging. What a privilege to be part of such a special milestone.
