On 22 June, the Kapa Haka group, Adam Ward, Alana Stonex and Carolyn Pou (Whaea Carolyn) travelled to Matariki Whare for the purpose of learning about our local iwi and the history of the area.
Over the past few weeks, students at Somerville Intermediate have been learning about Mānawatia a Matariki and delving into our rich cultural heritage as New Zealanders.

On Monday 9 May, Somerville students participated in the Auckland South (Intermediate & Senior), Auckland East (Intermediate & Senior) Cluster Chess Tournament, held at Somerville Intermediate.
With COVID restrictions in place during Term One this year, two teachers, Ms Naylor and Mrs van Diepen took this as an opportunity to invigorate student leadership at our kura, so that we can provide authentic opportunities for the development of leadership capabilities.

Despite the damp but warm conditions on Monday, the Year 8's had an amazing day for their special Somer Fest event and enjoyed having fun with their peers.
We would like to congratulate all our students who entered their STEAM Innovations/Science Fair projects into the NIWA East & South Auckland competition which was held online this year, due to Covid-19 restrictions. Students have worked incredibly hard in presenting their projects to the judges, who were most impressed.
STEAM Innovations Fair is an amazing learning journey. Not only do students experience authentic science by following the Scientific Inquiry Process or the Engineering Design Process, they also develop literacy, numeracy, technology, critical thinking, communication, creativity, collaboration and self management skills.
Madagascar was a huge success! The cast’s singing, acting and dancing was truly remarkable.
