Girls

Year 7

On Thursday 16th May, the Year 7 Girls Soccer team braved all kinds of weather to compete in and eventually win the South Eastern Zone tournament. Playing amazing team soccer and being positive in all aspects of the game, the girls swept the competition aside, winning all five games and only conceding 2 goals throughout the day. We are so proud of the girls. They represented the school incredibly well and the many people watching commented on their excellent sportsmanship.

Year 8

On Friday 24th May, the Year 8 Girls Soccer team enjoyed a positive day out at the SEZ tournament, eventually coming home in second place and only losing out to Howick in the final. Leading up to the final they won all their games, including a tense battle with local rivals BBI. The improvement in all of their play was fantastic and they should be very proud of the result.

Winning 2-0 in a tough match against Elim in the first round, the boys then hit their stride and beat Pakuranga 8-0 and Farm Cove 6-0. In the fourth round, we met Howick Intermediate and won convincingly 3-0.

Our first semi-final was against Mission Heights Junior College. Again, the team were outstanding and had a decisive win scoring 4 goals to zero. In the final, we met Farm Cove once again. They were determined to win this time and shot at our goal many times during the match. Thanks to some outstanding goalkeeping, defensive work and our strikers taking the opportunities when they could, we won the final 3-1. In total, we scored 26 goals and had only 1 goal scored against us in the 6 games played.

The player of the day was Khavin Kannan for all round defensive and attacking play. However, the entire team played extremely well and we are very proud of each and every one of the boys.

The team is currently training for the Auckland Interzone Football competition on 12th June. We are certain the boys will do well if they continue to strive for the Somerville vision of being “the best you can be”.

Year 8

Last week the Year 8 Boys Soccer team went to South Eastern Zone. We won 7/7 games, scored 27 goals and we didn’t concede a single goal!

Our first game was against Howick Intermediate School. We did well, coming out on top, winning 5-0. Up next was a less experienced team, Pakuranga Intermediate. They played well but we played better football, scoring our top number of goals against them, winning 7-0. Our third game was against Sancta Maria, where we scored 5 goals. The toughest game in the pool came up next, against Farm Cove. They were a very strong team with great passing. Fortunately we defended well and took our chances and came out winning the game 4-0.

The next game was the semi-finals where we were up against Elim who had come second in their pool, but we played great football and ended up going to the finals by winning 3-0. The next game was most important in the tournament - it was the final! Both teams played good football but there had to be a winner. We came out on top and won 3-0. Frozen cokes here we come!

Overall, it was a great tournament and we thank the hosts St Kents. Mr Pillay, our coach, and all the parents for supporting us.
