The School Swimming Sports for Year 8 was held on Friday 15th February, with a full day of events at the Papatoetoe Pools.

Unfortunately the Year 7 event that was planned for the following Friday, 22nd February, had to be cancelled due to bad weather.

The Year 8 event was run with a large number of timed heats and some finals, that then produced the times that would decide which pupils would qualify for a place in the Somerville Swim Squad for the South Eastern Zone event that is to be held at Lloyd Elsmore Park Pool & Leisure Centre on Friday 22nd March. Danielle Asiata had the fastest times for all of the girls events, but was unable to swim in the finals as she had to leave early to attend another swimming event. Sara Adams won four out of five finals, while Sophie White won the remaining final. In contrast, the boys' events saw a number of different swimmers show their strengths. Thomas Blakeman won two finals, while Lachlan Hawker, Tony Zhang and Conrad Hynes won one each of the remaining three.

In addition to this, there were also fun events, such as the House “Dance/Chant” competition, “Width Races” and also a supervised “Free Swim", that also saw the teachers in the water.

The event was organised by Mr Bennett, but full credit must be given to the other staff and especially the enthusiastic parent helpers, without whom it could not take place.
