The SEZ Speech Competition final was held at Bucklands Beach Intermediate on Thursday 20 September.

Jacob Newson represented Somerville in the formal speeches. He was the last to go out of 6 competitors, so had a nervous wait while he listened to five other amazing speeches. Finally Jacob stood to give his speech on ‘What Is Normal?’ which made the audience think about society’s accepted norms and how everyone is different in different ways.

The judges spent nearly 25 minutes deliberating on a first and second place, which shows how hard it was to judge. Sadly, Jacob was not one of those placed, but we are proud of his achievement in the competition and we are sure we will see more of Jacob in the years to come.

Krishant Maharaj was our competitor for the impromptu speeches. Given a choice of two topics and just 6 minutes to prepare a 2 minute speech, this was a tough round. Krishant chose to talk about winning the Lotto and had the audience thoroughly entertained with tales of mansions, pirate ships and his last $3 being given to charity. There were a further three competitors and more deliberations before the winner was announced and we are proud to say that Krishant won the competition!

A huge congratulations to both boys and thanks for the friends and family who came to support on the day.
