Early on Wednesday 9 August, the Somerville Boys' Hockey team travelled to the North Harbour Hockey Stadium in Rosedale Park, Albany, to participate in the Interzone Boys' Hockey tournament 2018.

We were fortunate to have the service of a former student and capable Howick College umpire, Cole MacCallum, who accompanied the team as our official umpire.

The tournament saw Somerville field a mixed team of years 7 and 8. The team responded positively to the challenge of playing in a tournament of 11 a-side hockey games. Participating in pool play competition, our first game was against a strong and aggressive Pukekohe Intermediate. Our players struggled to settle into a rhythm in this game and the team found themselves on the losing side of the scoreboard. Our second game was against St Peters and whilst the team showed improvement, we lost this game. In our third game against Papatoetoe Intermediate, we were successful in retaining the ball and gained cohesion, playing a passing game, creating with opportunities for scoring. Our strikers were able to take advantage of scoring opportunities and we won! The fourth game was against Huapai for 5th and 6th place. Somerville won this game and we ended up in 5th place overall at the tournament.

Well done to the team in representing the school at the Interzone for the first time in over a decade!
