On Tuesday 19 June, the Somerville Boys' Hockey team travelled to Lloyd Elsmore to participate in the SEZ Boys' Hockey tournament 2018. The tournament saw a Somerville team field a mixed team of Years 7 and 8. The team responded positively to the challenge of playing in a tournament of 11 a-side hockey games.

Participating in pool play competition, our first game was against Farm Cove Intermediate. Our strikers were successful in retaining the ball and gained cohesion, playing a passing game, as they took the ball forward, creating opportunities for scoring. Jacques Basson played a key role at centre forward, together with Gary Basson and Johnny Steele, Josh Borland and Jonty Israel, sharing the scoring opportunities. The Somerville team made a promising beginning to the tournament with a 4-0 win.

Our second game was against Howick Intermediate with a closer score line 1-0, a score which did not reflect the amount of possession the team had. Our third game was against Mission Heights with a draw and we ended at the top of Pool A, proceeding with a play off against the second ranked team in Pool B, Pakuranga Intermediate, a game we won 2-0. This win secured our place in the final against our hockey archrivals, BBI.

The final against BBI was a thrilling finish to a great hockey day. After early pressure from BBI, the team held off and responded with drives through the centre by Trent MacCallum, quick passing between the strikers who managed to score a goal. The team had further penalty corners which they were unable to convert. BBI refused to give up and our team conceded a penalty corner at the final whistle. The penalty corner was played out and a second one given, which was successfully defended. The game ended at last, 1-0 to Somerville!

Somerville Boys had won the SEZ tournament for the first time in many years and are off to the Interzone Auckland Championships!

Team members: Jacques Basson, Johnny Steele, Josh Borland, Jonty Israel, Gary Basson, Trent MacCallum, Anish Ram, Kieran Gawn, Cameron Christie, Phoenix Thong, Japman Sodhi, Jacob Higham, Liam Anderson, Hartej Bassan, Tomo Clark (GK).

It was good to see all round improvements in individual skills and team play throughout the day. Well done to all the players! Thank you to the parents who supported the team with transport and first aid support.

On Thursday 21 June, thirteen Year 7 & 8 girls represented Somerville Intermediate at the South Eastern Zone Girls' Hockey tournament.

The girls played to win and saw themselves coming first in their pool of the round robin tournament, having lost no games and conceding no goals. This meant they were through to the playoffs. The playoffs started and the girls won their match, taking them into the final against St Kentigerns, this time to play for 1st and 2nd place. Unfortunately the girls lost this game 1-0.
