Year 7 Boys

On Wednesday 13 June 2018 at Seddon Fields in Point Chevalier, the Somerville Year 7 Boys' Football team competed in the AAIM's Football Tournament. All Auckland zone winners were present and as such, this was an elite competition.

We were drawn in a pool with Otahuhu Intermediate, Rosmini College and The Gardens. After a slow start, we managed a comfortable 4 - 0 win over Otahuhu. Rosmini were our toughest pool opponent. Both teams tried to play constructive football and we ended up winning 3 - 1, largely due to a very tight and well organised defence and some clinical finishing. Our last game of pool play saw a comfortable 3 - 1 win over The Gardens.

Topping our table meant we were drawn against a very competitive Kowhai Intermediate side. Despite dominating much of the possession and having a number of chances, we found ourselves down 1- 0 with 6 minutes to play. We were awarded a penalty which was converted and managed another goal with 2 minutes remaining. I was so proud of the poise and desire of the team in this game!

In the final we met a very good Sacred Heart team and despite dominating the first half, went into half time 0 - 0. In the second, our opposition had the better of the play and unfortunately we lost 2 - 0.

Coming second in Auckland [although we were all disappointed] is an amazing achievement! Junior football in Auckland is incredibly competitive and to finish second is something to be truly proud of. I have not mentioned any individuals in this report as we achieved what we achieved through the hard work, skill and commitment of every player. The character of this team is exceptional and it was truly an honour to be their coach.

Year 8 Boys

On Thursday 14 June, our Year 8 Somerville boys' soccer team travelled to Seddon Fields to compete against the best of the best schools in Auckland. After a heartbreaking second placing last year we were there to put things right.

In our first pool game against Waitakere Primary, we won 5-0, a great start to the day! Up next we had Papatoetoe, a physical side, but teamwork led us through and we came away with a 3-0 win. In our final pool match we played Rosmini College and it was a stressful game, resulting in an unlucky 1-0 loss. We finished second in our pool. Now we faced our most difficult opponent, the team we dreaded... Sacred Heart! We fought hard and defended well. It was 0-0 at half time. We scored a goal in the second half and held them off for a 1-0 win. What a way to make the final! We then faced Rosmini once again. We had to step up our game if we wanted to win. The first half was ours, going into the break 1-0 up. The second half was a dreadful performance from our team and a great free kick from the other team levelled it up. Unfortunately we lost through a controversial penalty, which was a sad ending to such a great day.

Thanks to Mr Pillay for being such a great coach.
