Boys
In probably what is one of our biggest sporting challenges at Somerville (given the short turnaround from AIMS), on 18 October, ten Y7 and Y8 boys travelled to the Otara Leisure Centre to compete in the SEZ Volleyball tournament.

We had a tough day, losing a close opening game to BBI, followed by an emphatic win over Sancta Maria, before losing in our last two games of the day against Howick and Ferguson.

We were so impressed by the team's great attitude, fronting up to each game with a smile and enthusiasm and enjoying the company, while playing alongside other students from SEZ schools in volleyball. Many of the teams commented on how nice and friendly we were during the day.

We look forward to going back in 2018!

Girls
It was a fantastic day had by all at the SEZ Girls' Volleyball Competition held at the Otara Leisure Centre on Thursday 19 October.

The girls started strong with a convincing 38-13 win over Elim, thanks to our consistent serves. Up next was BBI. This game saw some very exciting rallies and led to a well deserved 35-15 victory. For game 3 we faced Ferguson Intermediate. In the past Ferguson have been a tough team to play and this time around, it was no different. Although the girls played well, we lost 35-19. Our next game against Sancta Maria was a very close game. The score was neck and neck for the first half, but the girls pushed through and took the lead, finishing with a strong score of 31-19. The girls knew their next match against Howick would be a very tough game. Winning the coin toss, Somerville were able to serve which gave us a very strong lead in the beginning. Howick began to catch up later in the game, however, it was not enough. The girls were grinning, coming away with a 29-24 win.

The girls ended up coming 2nd in their pool, leading us to play Sir Edmund Hillary in the semifinal. The girls started with a consistent lead over Sir Ed, but unfortunately round 1 ended with a victory to Sir Ed. Round 2 was a fight to stay in the game. The girls played exceptionally well, both in their offensive and defensive game play. Unfortunately Sir Ed took out the 2nd round. For our final game we played against St John. It was an exciting start to the game with Somerville taking out the first round. The second round was closely won by St John, leading us into a third and final round. It was a very close round, and although the girls kept up, it was a narrow loss for us in the end.

Overall we placed 4th out of 12 teams. They should be very proud of their efforts!

Well done to the team: Aditi Thota, Myah Leilua, Chelanne Saifoloi, Fusi Vaioleti, Crimson Glasse, Tmax Jones, Humaira Ali and Brooke Conover.
