Trials for the school ski team were held at Snowplanet in Term 1.

The nine students selected for the team this year were: Harry Westall, Joel Beehre, Mitch Carr, Maria Carr, Jack Wilson, Ryan McCorkindale, League Chan, Gabby MacDonald and Kaitlyn Wade.

In preparation for the North Island Primary and Intermediate Snow Sports Champs at Whakapapa, the team had six race coaching sessions at Snowplanet during Terms 2 and 3.

For the third year in a row, the team were fortunate to be hosted by the Pinnacles Ski Club for this event. The weather for the competition this year was incredible, with consecutive bluebird days and great snow.

The first day of competition was the giant slalom. This involved competitors racing against the clock for the fastest times. As expected, competition was fierce, with some spectacular crashes. In a large field of 168 boys, Mitch skied well to place 64th, followed by Harry 93rd, Ryan 124th, Joel 129th and League 156th. Best of the girls was Maria who placed 64th. Unfortunately, Gabby took a heavy fall during competition and was ruled out for the rest of the event. Both she and Kaitlyn did not post times on the board for the first day of the competition.

The second day of competition was the dual slalom. This is where racers compete against each other on a shorter course. With the nerves all gone from the day before, the team found their mojo and skied exceptionally well with Mitch, Maria, Kaitlyn, and Joel winning both their races and Ryan winning one of his.

Overall, Somerville finished a very credible 30th place out of 74 schools. Special thanks to Gary Carr, Colin Wade, Nick McCorkindale, Chris Wilson, Gavin MacDonald and Barry Westall for supporting the team at the competition. Roll on NIPS 2018!
