Girls

After finishing 2nd at the SEZ Netball Competition, the Y7 and Y8 Girls Netball team qualified for the Netball Interzone Competition. This was held on Wednesday 23rd August at the Auckland Netball Centre. Both teams played extremely well and demonstrated great skill and sportsmanship throughout the day. With both teams having close losses in the pool play rounds, the Y7 and Y8 team both faced off for 9th and 10th in Auckland. After a long day, both teams showed great fight and composure, especially in the closing minutes of the game. The Y7 team placed 9th equal, and the Y8 team won their game, playing 9th overall. Congratulations on a fantastic day out and solid season girls!

Year 7
On Tuesday 1 August, myself, along with Joanna Van Der Mescht, Jessica Danbrook and a number of parent helpers, escorted the Somerville Intermediate netball teams to the SEZ tournament.

This year's Year 7 boys' team was made up of ten players, each of them excited and anxious to play in the round robin competition. The boys had four very convincing wins against rival schools, Sancta Maria, Bucklands Beach, Elim and Howick Intermediate. This meant that the boys won the SEZ tournament and automatically qualified to take part in the Auckland tournament.

On Wednesday 23 August, the boys ventured once again to the AMI courts on Morrin Road to face their toughest competition yet. The boys were placed into 'Pool B' where we were to play against Otahuhu, Churchill Park and Pukekohe. Our Year 7 boys persevered in order to win all three games and were moving forward to quarter finals, where they were to play Murrays Bay. Unfortunately, our boys couldn't break their strong defence and suffered their first loss. Although there was a biref moment of disappointment the silver lining was that they could still place either 5th, 6th, or 7th, should they win against Greenmeadows. After winning that game, the boys were left to face off for 5th place against Balmoral, where they were successful in winning 8-4.

Overall the boys placed first in the SEZ competition and came fifth in Auckland, out of sixteen schools. Each and every one of these boys contributed to their success and it was great to see them work together as a team. Hopefully next year Somerville can pull the team back together again and celebrate even more success!

Year 8
With our Y8 Boys' Netball team performing so well at the SEZ tournament, they qualified to represent our zone at the Interzone competition. This was held on Wednesday 23 August at the Auckland Netball Centre. Early in the day the boys faced some tough competition against Kedgley Intermediate and Manurewa Intermediate and couldn't secure a win. They played their strongest against Glendowie Intermediate and won 10-9. Jaden Naidoo played outstanding in defence all day, and Hugo Clarke and Kyle Lowe were strong in the circle. Congratulations on a great season boys!
