Friday 17 March was a big day for Somerville Intermediate School's best swimmers. The South Eastern Zone Swimming competition was held at Lloyd Elsmore Pools.

 

Somerville had a squad of 28 swimmers: Jacey Li, Danielle Curlett, Lauren O'Reilly, Jade Schumacher, Emma Kitchingham, Rowan Maclean, Ali Al-Ani, George Buchan, Vian Shah, Aryan Sharma, Matthew Abad, Alex Widvey, Seven Xu, Shay Dawson, Finn Wilton, William Watt and Ashton Smith from Year 7 and Laura Wesseling, Caitlin Schmidt, Maria Wangford, Freya Bould, Alice Fenn, Daniel Cieplinski, Ethan Green, Jared Wee, Dylan Reynolds, Bo Crawford and Kyan Brown from Year 8.

The squad managed to produce 21 finalists in 14 of the individual events. Of particular merit, are the following swimmers' results from the finals:

 

Laura Wesseling placed 3rd in the Year 8 Girls' 50m backstroke, 1st in the Year 8 Girls' 50m and 100m freestyle, Maria Wangford placed 2nd in the Year 8 Girls' 50m breaststroke and 3rd in the Open Girls' 50m butterfly, Daniel Cieplinski placed 3rd in the Year 8 Boys' 50m and 100m freestyle, and Bo Crawford placed 3rd in the Year 8 Boys' 50m breaststroke.

 

In addition to these individual performances, the relay teams placed 1st in the Year 8 Boys' 4x50m freestyle relay and 1st in the Year 8 Girls' 4x50m freestyle relay, 2nd in the Year 7 Girls' 4x50m freestyle relay and 3rd in the Year 7 Boys' 4x50m freestyle relay.

 

Due to these outstanding results, a squad of 9 swimmers progressed to the Auckland Interzone event.
