The safety of our students is an ongoing concern for us. While the ultimate responsibility for the safety of students travelling to and from school lies with parents/caregivers, road safety is a partnership in which the school, students and you have a role to play.

The issue of safety is particularly important for schools around 8.15 am and 3.00 pm. At school we are placing a great deal of emphasis on safe pedestrian and safe cyclist practices.

"Hot Spots" for Somerville Intermediate

Cyclists

Students who bike to school are required to have a bike licence. This is issued when we receive written parental permission and confirmation that the student has a roadworthy bike and the necessary safety gear, and that they know the road code. Cyclists must wear a safety approved and well fitted helmet and are encouraged to wear high visibility vests. Bikes are not to be ridden in the school grounds. The police have advised us that our students must not ride on the footpath. We suggest that wherever possible, cyclists use the Meadowlands entrance to avoid Somerville Road where the traffic is travelling so much faster. If your child must cycle on Somerville Road, they need to be especially careful turning into the school and be alert to traffic coming from both directions, as well as, traffic turning into the school. Those using Meadowland Drive should exit the school via the walkway (walking their bikes) and use the crossing if they are heading up Meadowland Drive.

Somerville Road

Congestion is worst between 8.15 - 8.30 am and 2.50 - 3.10 pm. A short walk is good exercise for your child, so make your pick up point a little further up the road eg Jane Eyre Drive or further up Somerville Road. It will save you time and improve safety.

Meadowland Drive

The students must use the crossing on Meadowland Drive. Parents dropping students off can use the car park in front of the Cockle Bay Tennis Club.

Students Getting Out of Cars

Please ensure that your passengers always get out of the car on the curb side.

Loop Road Pedestrian Crossing

Students must use the pedestrian crossing on the loop road. This applies at all times, even if the traffic flow is light. We discourage the use of the loop road as a before school or after school collection point, the congestion is a potential danger. Please use either drop off points on Somerville Road, Meadowland Drive or the surrounding side streets rather than the loop road. Buses must have access through the loop road at the beginning and end of the day.

LEFT TURN ONLY FOR CARS EXITING THE LOOP ROAD INTO SOMERVILLE ROAD BETWEEN THE HOURS: 8.00 - 9.15 AM AND 2.30 - 3.15 PM. THIS CAUSES MAJOR CONGESTION FOR TRAFFIC COMING INTO THE SCHOOL.

If at all possible, parents should park cars on the school side of Meadowland Drive and Somerville Road to avoid the need for their children to cross the road.

Thank you for helping to make the roads safer for our children!
