Developing the habit of learning

At Somerville Intermediate School homework is set to allow students to practice and consolidate skills previously taught at school and to develop personal study skills.

The school encourages and assists each child to

  • Develop a positive attitude towards learning
  • Develop positive work patterns and habits, particularly self discipline, independence, responsibility and perseverance.

Homework is set with the purpose of defining or supplementing work already covered in class to develop students' ability to organise their time and to give parents the opportunity to observe work being studied in the classroom as well as student's work habits and attainment.

Care is taken to set work which is well understood, with attainable goals within the student's capabilities and relevant to class work. Homework will usually be set Monday to Thursday with a guideline of approximately 45 minutes per night. Homework will be checked and evaluated by the teacher.
